Being in the custom service industry I get and answer a lot of questions on a daily basis. I do it so much I can just about tell the problem by just reading the title of the email or the thread. But one thing that burns me up is answering the same question over and over again. So with that said I have decided to write a small guide for getting the most out of asking for help or support.

1. Search all documentation first.
This is a very important step when asking for support. Always search first and try to find the answer to your question on your own. If it is a common problem or a basic problem then chances are your question has been answered before. Also if the company you are wanting support from has user forums it is a good idea to ask their first. The reason for this is users in all different time zones visit forums and you may get a quicker response.

2. Keep emails short and to the point.
Basically do not get long winded and instead try to keep your email on point and also include as much information about the problem as possible.

3. Include steps to reproduce the issue.
This one is very important. We are not mind readers so the more specific you can be the better. Having to swap three emails just get some information slows down the process for both you and the company.

4. Be Kind and Courteous
There is nothing more that will cause a delay in a response to your problem than being rude. We are all humans and if you say something to make me mad you are moved far away from any high priority. It is just a fact of life and I am being honest here.

5. One question at a time
Please try to ask one question at a time. That includes waiting for a response to the first question before asking others. This is a common problem with our ticket system. Some people will submit 5 different tickets and that causes us to have look through each one before a reply is sent.

Hopefully these tips will help you out and if you have any of your own please post a comment.

Today I found a tips and tricks article discussing html email from NetTuts. I pretty much knew of most of the techniques but tip number 6 is great.

With gmail whatever it finds at the beginning of the email is what it uses to show in your inbox. For the newsletters I have been sending it would be something like: “Having trouble reading this email? Click here to see it in your browser”. Not very friendly and not one that jumps out and makes you want to read it.

The tip from Nettuts is:

Insert a 1px x 1px image as the very first element in your email. Wrap the image in span tags setting the font color to the same as the background. Whatever text you put in the ALT tags for your 1px x 1px image will now replace that google snippet in the users inbox.

Truly brilliant and some nice outside the box thinking. For the other tips visit: 6 Easy Ways to Improve Your HTML Emails.

68 Classifieds v4.1 beta 2 is now released and available for download. It was actually released yesterday. From the first beta to this a lot of small little changes was added. Most notable is the module system is now totally reworked and a lot of work went into the new system. I also left the ability for modules to be backwards compatible so the same module that works with v4.1 can also work with v4.0. The bad news is all modules released will have to be updated or they will not work with v4.1.

I have spent the last week rebuilding all the modules I have personally developed and released and will be posting them for download when beta 3 is released. In the meantime if you are a 68 Classifieds customer please download the beta and give it a try. The more testers the better.

TextExpander is a great tool and I now use it daily. Actually I use it so often I don’t think I could live without it.

When I first started out I started creating snippets for common email reply’s. Thanks for contacting us, instructions for resetting a password, etc. That alone is worth the money to buy this app but I have since added lots more snippets that I use.

The first group of custom snippets I use is for our forums which uses vBulletin. Some common tasks on it is typing
,
,
, tags. It doesn’t take that long to write them out but typing ,[q is a whole lot quicker.

So I have bundled up the snippet group and added it as a download to hopefully benefit some of you. Keep in mind this is really basic and only includes a few tags. Mainly the ones that I use most.

Here is a list of the ones included:

,[q -

,[c -

,[b -
,[p -

,[l -

» Download Now

If you have any to add please pass them along.

I have been working with jQuery recently because we are going to be using it in the 4.1 release of 68 Classifieds. One of the things I couldn’t get my head around was how to pass the id of a database record to a jQuery click function.

For example in regular javascript I had:

function deleteit(id) {
  alert(id);
}
<a href="#" onclick="deleteid(1)">Delete</a>

So with a little help I found out how it can be accomplished with jQuery:

$('a.delete').click(function(event) {
	event.preventDefault();
	var id = this.id.replace('del_', "");
       alert(id);
}
<a href="delete.php?act=delete&amp;id=1" id="del_1" class="delete">Delete</a>

I know this isn’t anything revolutionary but it sure had me stumped for a little while. Hopefully this will help someone else just learning jQuery.
