At the time of writing this, Node.js is now only 70.4% JavaScript. And not only does it now have C++ and its predecessor C (which is basically like running your app on 2 versions of Ruby, for you Ruby developers out there), but Node owners, Joyent, have also injected an unknown language called “Other,” threatening the maintainability by developers outside the company.

Jenn Schiffer is just brilliant!

NYT:

On Tuesday night, the first game of the 2014 World Series drew just 12.2 million viewers to Fox, making it the lowest-rated Game 1 on record. Game 2 on Wednesday night fared somewhat better, with 12.9 million people tuning in.

For me it’s the start time. With an 8pm start time, that means at the earliest it will be off is around 11:00.

On the odd chance, it is a good game then it could go longer. So I’d rather just not see any of it, instead of missing the most exciting part.

There’s more to your finances than just the math. Your habits, your tendencies, and your personal psychology all play a role. You’re not just saving money when you set aside cash, you’re setting aside habit capital. And everything grows over time. — Eric Ravenscraft —

Rebuilding Wardrobe – Sabbatical

As I’m sure you are aware I’ve taken a little sabbatical from the rebuilding Wardrobe series. Before I started the series I asked Chris Pitt for some advice since he has done it before. He said:

The rebuilding series’ are a huge load. Anything upsets their schedule.

That did in fact happen and put me way off schedule.

Also a minor issue is I am building this with Laravel 5 which is just in alpha. So keeping up with changes in it and developing a new app was too time consuming. With all that I’m going to take a few more weeks off and plan to resume in November.

I appreciate all the interest in the series and I hope it continues to go well once I resume.

A simple app isn’t simple by virtue of having fewer options, a simple app is simple because of usability. The fewer the options an app has, the more complicated it can actually become to use

Great tips that I want to keep in mind with the new Wardrobe Admin area.

How Broken Glasses Led to Great Customer Service

Have you ever had those crazy weeks where everything goes wrong? That describes this week for me.

It all started Tuesday night. After dinner I dropped my glasses and the lens fell out. I squinted while trying to fix them but that just caused a massive headache. Concerned about staring at a computer the next day and the ensuing headache, I asked for the morning off so I could get them repaired. But not before fixing them myself:

glasses

Pretty genius right? I think so as well.

The next morning I dropped the kids off at school and went out on a mission to get them fixed. The first place I stopped, a nice lady welcomed me and asked what she could help me with. I told her my situation and she took the glasses back in a top secret room where I can only assume they do really cool stuff.

A few minutes later she came out and had not only fixed the problem, but tightened all the screws and even got the glasses bent back in shape. At that point I asked, how much do I owe you? It caught me by surprise when she said nothing.

I’m not sure if my genius™ fix made her feel sorry for me or if it was just the store policy. (I’m thinking the former) Either way for my future vision needs they have a new customer.
